Sculptra:
Sculptra represents an exciting new option for the signs of facial aging. At Cosmetic
Laser & Surgery Network we place great emphasis on facial volumes and contour. Sagging and wrinkles form in response to
a diminishing of the skins underlying foundation. Fat, muscle and bone all decrease with aging. This leads to thinning skin,
flattening of the face, hollowing of the eyes and the area around the mouth.
Sculptra can be used in place of fat grafting (FAMI) to revolutionize the face. In many situations
Sculptra is an even better option than fat transfer for those patients looking to turn back the clock.
Sculptra is most often associated with the cosmetic fillers, but is actually a volume increaser ("volumizer").
Sculptra is a collagen regeneration product that, unlike traditional fillers (Restylane, Radiance and collagen), works by
stimulating your skins own fibroblasts to produce new collagen. As its name implies, a series of treatments with Sculptra
will fill in and recontour areas where underlying supportive collagen and fat tissue have diminished with age, or have been
damaged via injury or disease. In doing so, Sculptra smoothes loose, wrinkled and/or depressed skin.
Sculptra was first approved in Europe in 1999 for the cosmetic correction of scars and wrinkles. It
has been used in approximately 150,000 patients in more than 30 countries. Recently FDA approved for the treatment of facial
fat loss in patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Sculptra can be used to restore the youthful fullness of our temples,
cheeks, chin, eye areas and hands that is lost with the passage of time.
Sculptra is injectable poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA). It is a biocompatible, immunologically inert (i.e.:
does not trigger inflammatory reactions), synthetic polymer belonging to the category of biomaterials termed "resorbable".
Sculptra is completely eliminated from the body in the form of carbon dioxide. There are no known systemic effects and no
allergy test is required.
Sculptra's benefit is long lasting and achieved through a simple series of injections into the deeper
layers of the skin, with each treatment taking less than 30 minutes. Other than the initial "needle poke" sensation, the treatment
is quite comfortable and free of burning or stinging. Three to four Sculptra sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, are
necessary to produce a substantial result. New collagen production appears slowly and gradually over a period of months, for
a natural, healthy and fuller look. Sculptra's collagen stimulation is long term and may last for 2 years before a touch up
is needed.
